A Voice That Almost Went Unheard
Mississippi native Jamal Roberts, 27, is no stranger to hard work — or disappointment. A P.E. teacher and father of three, he’s spent years nurturing a passion for music rooted in church pews and soul records.
When Jamal first auditioned this season with a soulful rendition of Rick James’ “Mary Jane”, he instantly won over judges Luke Bryan, Lionel Richie, and Carrie Underwood, earning a golden ticket and a shot at stardom.
But what viewers may not know is that this wasn’t Jamal’s first attempt at American Idol — not even his second.
Two “No’s” Before One Big “Yes”
In a candid interview with Billboard, Jamal revealed that he had auditioned twice before for American Idol.
His first audition was cut short — he was told he was too young and needed more vocal training.
The second time, he came unprepared and didn’t have enough material ready.
“I didn’t get defeated,” Jamal said. “I never gave up. I took the no. I’ve always been able to take constructive criticism and use it for my gain and try again. This has always been me.”
Where others might have walked away, Jamal returned stronger — and more determined — each time.
Raised in Faith, Fueled by Passion
Jamal’s roots are deeply planted in Meridian, Mississippi, where his life in music began.
“I started singing at the age of two,” he shared. “My grandparents found out I could sing, and I started singing in church. I was in the choir, I played drums, I ushered — if the church doors were open, I was there.”
With a bishop grandfather on one side and a deacon on the other, music and faith became the foundation of his voice — and his perseverance.

Balancing Dreams and Fatherhood
In the years between auditions, Jamal didn’t just grow as a vocalist — he grew as a man. He became a father to three daughters, including a newborn who arrived just before he made it to the Top 7 this season.
And even before Idol, he was chasing his dreams. In 2020, he independently released a single, continuing to build his artistry on his own terms.
A Message of Gratitude and Hope
After securing his place in the Top 3, Jamal took to Instagram to thank the people who have carried him this far:
“THANK YOU GOD!! Thank you, America!! Thank you, MeridianⓂ️! Thank you, American Idol! 😭😭😭🙏🏾🙏🏾”
From gospel halls to national television, Jamal’s story is one of resilience, growth, and grace. He may have been told “no” in the past, but every step led him here — to a moment where he’s one performance away from becoming the next American Idol.
Don’t Miss the Finale
Tune in to the American Idol Season 23 Grand Finale on Sunday, May 18 at 8PM ET on ABC to see if Jamal Roberts takes home the title — and cements his place in music history.
