Damian Lillard and his college sweetheart, Kay’la Hanson, got married in 2021. The seven-time NBA All-Star filed for divorce from his college sweetheart earlier this month which came less than a week after he was traded from the Trail Blazers to the Bucks.
The filing cited “irreconcilable differences” that “caused the irremediable breakdown” of the now-former couple’s union.
It seems there is a lot more than meets the eye.
Divorce documents show Kay’La stating that Lillard’s “family man” image is merely a part of his public persona.
RadarOnline.com dropped the nasty details as Kay’La Lillard claims the basketball star left his family in October of 2022 but suggests that he was often absent even before that time.
Via RadarOnline:
“I have been the primary parent for our three children since their birth,” she stated in the filing.
“While I am a registered and licensed nurse, I am a stay-at-home mother for our children. I have made all the major decisions regarding our children: I interviewed and selected their pediatrician and their dentist; I have made all medical decisions for the children.”
She continued, “I want the children to have a healthy relationship with their father. I understand he is busy and has many commitments he must attend to. I also understand that the brand ‘Damian Lillard’ needs to continue with an image of a family-man. Despite our separation for several months, I have continued to support that image to the public.”
Despite Lillard having a ton of pictures with his children online, his soon-to-be ex-wife is stating he is a very different person when nobody is watching.
“After [he] moved out in October 2022 until July 2023, [he] chose when and how much he saw the children while the children lived with me full-time in my home,” she claims. “When [he] was in town and not traveling for basketball, publicity, endorsements, or his music endeavors, he would pop over to visit for anywhere between thirty minutes to an hour to play with the kids while I was there or while a nanny was present a few times a week.”
Kay’La added that “there is no current parenting plan.”
“[He] has never been the sole parent responsible for the care of all three of our children, for any hours-long period of time without the help of nannies, assistants, and/or family members,” the filing reads.
The ex-couple have already been living apart as the filing states that Kay’La moved into a $2.7 million home in December without Damian.
She’s also asking Damian to pay her attorney fees if their issues “require a contested court appearance.”
The NBA star, who played for the Portland Trailblazers for 11 seasons before being traded to the Milwaukee Bucks, met Hanson while they were students at Weber State University in Utah. The couple were together for more than 10 years before tying the knot in 2021.
Lillard and Hanson welcomed their first child, son Damian Jr., in 2018. Their twins, Kalii and Kali, were born in 2021, just months before their wedding.
Lillard had a career year last season, averaging 32.2 points and 7.3 assists but played just 58 games as he sat out the final month.
