Jamal Roberts, a gym teacher from Mississippi and father of three, is still trying to believe it, he really won American Idol Season 23. One week after his big win, he shared how surreal it feels. Competing against talented singers like Breanna Nix and John Foster, Jamal stood out with his strong voice, big heart, and humble attitude. Now, his dream has come true, and he’s ready for what comes next.
Even though he’s a star now, Jamal’s life hasn’t changed too much as he still loves being a dad. After the finale, he flew straight home from Los Angeles to Mississippi to be with his daughters, Harmoni, Lyrik, and Gianna. He said all they really understood was, “Daddy win,” and that was enough. To them, he’s not a famous singer, he’s just a Dad, and that means the world to him.

One of the most exciting parts of the finale was when Jamal performed with country star Jelly Roll. They sang “Liar” and “Unpretty” together, and Jamal said Jelly Roll encouraged him to be his true self and make music that touches people’s hearts. Jamal also got advice from past Idol winner Fantasia Barrino, who told him to stay grounded and keep being real, no matter how big his career gets.
Jamal’s journey didn’t start on finale night, it began with a powerful audition that left the judges speechless. Singing “Mary Jane” by Rick James Jamal showed off his rich voice and natural stage presence. That moment launched him into the spotlight and showed the world he was ready to shine. Fans all over the country knew right then that he had something special.

Now that the show is over, Jamal is planning to start his music career, mainly in soul and gospel. However, he’s open to trying other styles as well. He says he doesn’t want to “stay in a box” and wants to reach as many people as possible. As for the $250,000 prize? Jamal joked that he hasn’t even seen it yet but when it comes, he plans to save it and use it wisely.
Jamal Roberts is more than just a winner, he’s an artist with a story and a purpose. He shows that with faith, hard work, and kindness, big dreams really can come true.
