Scarlett Johansson Revisits Her Best Fashion Moments on Film and the Red Carpet

Having acted since she was 7 years old, itโ€™s safe to say Scarlett Johansson is a Hollywood veteran. Whether sheโ€™s transforming for one of her many chameleonic film roles, or taking to the red carpet for one of the big, splashy premieres, the actor also knows how to dress the part of an A-lister.

In a new Life in Looks video, the star sat down with Vogue to relive some of her best fashion moments throughout her career.

Johanssonโ€™s trip down memory lane begins back in 1996, when she attended the premiere of Manny & Lo. Given it was her first leading role, the 12-year-old Johansson dresses to the nines in a vintage dress with a fur-cuff sweater. She got the ensemble from a vintage store she used to live near in downtown New York. โ€œIt was an adult vintage store called Dorothyโ€™s Closet, but the [owner] would put aside vintage kidโ€™s clothes for me,โ€ says Johansson. โ€œThis look is very now; I would wear it today.โ€

โ€œAs her star rose in Hollywood, Johansson developed her red carpet style. Her highlights include her first Met Gala in 2004, when she wore a chic, yellow Calvin Klein gown. โ€œWhen Iโ€™m on the red carpet, Iโ€™m a lot more daring with the colors that I wear,โ€ says Johansson.

At the 2021 American Cinematheque Awards, she opted for clean minimalism in a white Versace suit, complete with a fitted corsetโ€”and clean skin. โ€œIt had been two years since I had done a red carpet,โ€ she says of her post-pandemic style, which has leaned heavily on a back-to-basics beauty approach that begins with essentials from her new beauty brand, The Outset. โ€œI feel more like myself the older I get.โ€

Of course, a Life in Looks with Johansson wouldnโ€™t be complete without reliving some of her favorite outfits on film, too. Her 2001 Ghost World lookโ€”a simple green top and mini skirt, which she remembers as Banana Republicโ€”remains iconic, as is the bright-pink wig she wore in 2003โ€™s Lost in Translation. โ€œ[Director] Sofia Coppola has her own style,โ€ says Johansson.

โ€œSome of the clothes we were wearing were her clothes. Lots of Frenchie labels, like A.P.C, and Agnรจs B.โ€ She also reminisced on the skin-ั‚ฮนิะฝั‚ Black Widow suits sheโ€™s worn in the Avengers. โ€œSome of the Black Widow suits were incredibly uncomfortable and impractical; Some of them were better,โ€ she says. โ€œPlaying Natasha Romanoff has been one of the greatest treasures of my career.โ€
