The appearance of the character Maleficent in 1959 in the animated version was designed by animator Marc Davis, who created the enchanting horn and outfit with the cape’s long, magical tail. and the shoulder pads are higher than normal.

After watching the animated version, costume designer Anna B. Sheppard decided to keep the color of the character’s outfit the same because it was so perfect, there would only be slight changes in the Black Fairy scene. Dark appears at Princess Aurora’s christening. More details and materials are used, such as the color scheme will tend toward moss black, the stiffness and heaviness of the cloak will be greater, with more layers and layers. Artificial leather and fur are used at a reasonable density to increase the seriousness and appearance of the Dark Fairy.

One of the first elements that designers must pay attention to is the horn. The makeup artist in charge of Angelina Jolie is Rick Baker. He is famous in Hollywood as a master of monsters or hideous characters. Based on the animated version, Baker and his colleagues created three different sets of horns for the Dark Fairy character.

“The horn was one of the biggest problems I faced when styling Jolie. No one could move for a whole day with such large horns on their head. So I had to reduce its weight as much as possible,” Baker said. The horn set is made from urethane and synthetic resin so it is very light in weight and has good durability. Regarding the cheekbones, the crew had to cast plaster molds, then use synthetic rubber to create sharp parts for the cheekbones and ears.

To complete this makeup, every morning Angelina Jolie and her crew take at least 4 hours. Baker specifically focused on the figure’s horns and cheekbones. He applied very light makeup on Angelina’s face because to him, she had all the temperament of the Dark Fairy.

However, Angelina is a quite meticulous person. She wanted Baker to create a fake nose to make her look closer to the character, and at the same time use special implants for her ears to closely follow the original. From there, Baker had to design many different layers of silicone with a very streamlined weight and not cause any irritation to apply on the star’s face. “The best part is that we found an adhesive that is only ¼ inch long and less than half an inch wide, and fits neatly on her cheekbone,” Baker shares.

The most obvious innovation between the live-action and animated versions of Dark Fairy is his green skin. Baker as well as other members of the film crew all admitted that this skin color should not be kept for Jolie. “We still wanted her to have something seductive and beautiful. That is an important key point because we do not want our character to be a mobile entity, but a human being with all the most natural and attractive basic biological characteristics.

Accessories and shoes are also important elements that complete the Dark Fairy’s appearance. Rob Goodwin, a craftsman specializing in making high-end shoes, was chosen to design specifically for the film. Goodwin believes that the character of the Maleficent is a person with a complex and dark personality. Therefore, he takes inspiration from the designs that bring deep colors of contemporary fashion into his products.

Goodwin admits he is most inspired by Angelina Jolie. “Ideas come to me the most when I talk to her. She is an intelligent woman and has remarkable knowledge about culture and fashion. We sat together and created the best shoes for our characters” – Goodwin confided.

Shoe designers use wild animal leather materials, combined with fur, animal bones and sequins. These are delicate materials but at the same time create wildness in Goodwin’s designs. When combining these materials together, the shoes that the Dark Fairy wears have a magical look that no ordinary person can possess.

As for accessories and jewelry, the artist mainly responsible for the production of this category is Manuel Albarran. The products that Albarran designs include necklaces, rings, bracelets, shoulder jewelry, brooches… To make them, he uses materials such as leather, fur, bone and animal skin. “I combine metals and hard-to-find materials, based on the knowledge of history, philosophy and architecture that I have long researched. Then I use my own techniques to create the most unique and unique products possible.”

The materials he uses include gold, brass, bronze, rare animal bones and diamonds, in addition to some animal skins, skulls, bones, teeth and feathers for the ultimate purpose. is to create the “most dark and seductive designs for the Dark Fairy”.

Each Dark Fairy’s collar is uniquely designed by Albrarran in style and material. He said the collars must not only show feminine charm in the lines, but also create an air of power and strength for the character. It is the combination of the shoulder, collar and collar to create an absolute unity, a clever combination of leather, bone and other materials.

One of his favorite design details is the collar with a brooch made of high-quality animal bone. In addition, he used colored duck feathers to create gray with black and green, making these details more eye-catching.

Expert Toni G is in charge of an equally important step – makeup. She agreed with Baker that the character of the Dark Fairy must be both seductive and terrifyingly powerful. Toni G Choose dark brown and black tones for the eyes, with a bit of gold glitter to highlight Angelina Jolie’s contact lenses.

Red lipstick is the final important element for the Dark Fairy’s makeup. It must be a true red color, bright enough, red enough and have a slight shine. After the makeup, Arjen Tuiten applied a light layer of protective powder to Jolie’s entire face and body to ensure the makeup was long-lasting and durable. For the nails, the makeup artists used black, then covered them with a layer of pearlescent gloss to add elegance and charm to Angelina Jolie’s hands.
