Prince William and Princess Kate Middleton marked firstborn son Prince Georgeโ€™s 12th birthday by sharing a new portrait of the soon-to-be teenager.

In the pic, a smiling George can be seen leaning against a fence in the countryside. He is clad in an outdoorsy gilet over a checkered shirt with the sleeves rolled up. โ€œHappy 12th Birthday to Prince George! ๐ŸŽ‚,โ€ the official Kensington Palace X account wrote alongside the picture on Tuesday, July 22.

It has become a royal tradition that Kate, an amateur photographer herself, snaps her kidsโ€™ portraits on their special days, though itโ€™s not clear if she snapped Georgeโ€™s latest portrait.

โ€œYou can see from the pictures she takes that sheโ€™s better, certainly better than your average person on the streets,โ€ royal photographer Samir Hussein exclusively told Us Weekly in May 2020. โ€œSheโ€™s got a good eye, and sheโ€™s a good photographer. Iโ€™m impressed by her pictures, absolutely.โ€

Prince William and Princess Kate welcomed Prince George in July 2013, and the little one has been stealing hearts ever since. Fatherhood was โ€œquite a changeโ€ for the Duke of Cambridge, he said during a royal event three years after Georgeโ€™s arrival. โ€œIโ€™m very lucky in the support I have from Catherine, sheโ€™s an amazing [โ€ฆ]

William and Kate, both 43, welcomed George in July 2013 after two years of marriage.

โ€œHer Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge was safely delivered of a son at 4.24pm. The baby weighs 8lbs 6oz. The Duke of Cambridge was present for the birth,โ€ a statement from Buckingham Palace read at the time. โ€œHer Royal Highness and her child are both doing well and will remain in hospital overnight.โ€

George is the eldest son of the Prince and Princess of Wales โ€” William and Kate also share Princess Charlotte, 10, and Prince Louis, 6 โ€” and is currently second in the line of succession behind his father. Williamโ€™s dad, King Charles III, assumed the throne in 2022 following the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II.

As George has gotten older, William and Kate have been gradually preparing him for his eventual ascension. In addition to joining his parents at various walkabouts, George also served as a page during Charlesโ€™ coronation.

Princess Kate and Prince William have marked each of their childrenโ€™s birthdays over the years with new portraits. The sweet tradition began when their eldest son, Prince George, celebrated his first year in July 2014. โ€œI think it was very important that he played that part as a page boy at the Kingโ€™s coronation,โ€ royal expert Robert Jobson exclusively told Us in August 2024. โ€œIt gave him a real sense of the grandeur and all the expectation. I thought that was quite important, actually, for George.โ€

George is also taking after William, with the proud dad revealing at a 2024 garden party that he can see his eldest child as a โ€œpotential pilot in the making.โ€ (William previously served in the Royal Air Force.)

George also shares his fatherโ€™s passion for sports, often attending soccer matches with William in matching suits. The father-son duo recently expanded their sports fandom to tennis, stepping out at Wimbledon with Kate and Charlotte earlier in July.

George and Charlotte even got to meet menโ€™s singles champion Jannik Sinner and persuaded him to autograph a pair of tennis balls.

โ€œThank you so much, thatโ€™s really kind,โ€ Kate told Sinner, 23, per social media footage. โ€œWe brought one for their brother as well.โ€

Louis, for his part, was absent from the familyโ€™s outing at Wimbledon.
