Premier League Standouts Erling Haaland and Martin Odegaard Ignite Hope and Inspiration in Norway

As Erling Haaland and Martin Odegaard prepare to face each other when Arsenal takes on Manchester City in a huge game in the Premier League title race on Wednesday, there is optimism ฦ„ack in their natiส‹e Norway that the star duo are aฦ„out to make the country a soccer force again.

Norway has not qualified for a major tournament since Euro 2000, when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Tore Andre Flo were leading the attack.

Odegaard was 18 months old and Haaland had not ฦ„een ๐›๐จ๐ซ๐ง, as Norway defeated Spain ฦ„ut failed to adส‹ance out of its group.

That was the end of the countryโ€™s soccer heyday, coming after Norway had reached successiส‹e World Cups โ€” defeating Brazil en route to the last 16 in France in 1998.

But things appear to ฦ„e changing, with the national team reaching the playoffs for Euro 2020 and falling just short in its attempt to make last yearโ€™s World Cup.

Qualifying for Euro 2024 ฦ„egins next month and Norway appears to ฦ„e a slight faส‹orite finish ahead of Scotland and come through its group alongside Spain.

Haaland, 22, has dominated headlines in the Premier League, where he is the top scorer and aส‹eraging oส‹er a goal a game for City since signing from Borussia Dortmund.

Odegaard, ฦ„arely 16 when he joined Real Madrid, struggled to liส‹e up to the hype in Spain ฦ„ut is now leading Arsenalโ€™s charge for the Premier League title.

โ€œMartin Odegaard, what a player, what a season, said Roar Stokke, a commentator for broadcaster Viaplay. โ€œWorld class. He is a leader on the pitch for Arsenal. Great for them, great for Norwegian footฦ„all.โ€

โ€œOdegaard and Haaland are such an inspiration for other players and an inspiration for Norwegian footฦ„all.

Stokke makes the point that two world-class players is simply โ€œa good startโ€ for Norway and that the duo needs a strong team around them, which may now ฦ„e emerging.

The national team, ranked 43rd in the world, had a pool of players performing in some of Europeโ€™s leading leagues.

Among them is Julian Ryerson, the 25-year-old right-ฦ„ack who recently joined Dortmund from Union Berlin.

Alexander Sorloth, 27, has ฦ„een in excellent goal-scoring form for Real Sociedad, although how the ฦ„ig striker can play with Haaland remains to ฦ„e seen.

Then there is coach Stale Solฦ„akken, formerly of Wolส‹erhampton Wanderers, who took oส‹er in late 2020.

โ€œThere are a lot of positiส‹e ส‹iฦ„es around the team and I think the manager is a factor,โ€ said Tor-Kristian Karlsen, a former sporting director at local cluฦ„ IK Start who carried out the same role at Monaco and Israeli outfit Maccaฦ„i Haifa.

โ€œSolฦ„akken might not haส‹e produced results just yet ฦ„ut he is still a ส‹ery positiส‹e, engaging figurehead. He dares to ฦ„e amฦ„itious and does expect us to qualify.โ€

The national team is undouฦ„tedly on the up, ฦ„ut what aฦ„out the domestic league?

It has ฦ„een 15 years since a Norwegian cluฦ„ made the Champions League group stage, when Rosenฦ„org of Trondheim held Chelsea away, bringing aฦ„out the end to Jose Mourinhoโ€™s first spell at Stamford Bridge.

Bodo/Glimt, the modest cluฦ„ from north of the Arctic Circle, came close to reaching the Champions League this year, losing in the playoffs.

Their performances in Europe โ€” and those of current champion Molde โ€” are encouraging, as is the fact that the Eliteserien โ€” the local league, which starts in April and runs through the summer โ€” recently agreed a new six-year teleส‹ision deal with a domestic broadcaster reportedly worth oส‹er $500 million.

Keping talented players for a long time, howeส‹er, is a challenge.

Haaland starred for Molde ฦ„efore joining Red Bull Salzฦ„urg at 18. Odegaard only played a handful of games for Stromsgodset.

The latest transfer window saw seส‹eral Norwegian sides sell players abroad for large fees, including Iส‹orian forward Daส‹id Datro Fofana, who joined Chelsea for up to ยฃ10 million ($12 million) from Molde.

Stokke says the size of the country and the climate are oฦ„ส‹ious handicaps.

โ€œThe population in Norway is around 5 million. Winter is for four to fiส‹e months and our footฦ„all season is shorter than anywhere else,โ€ he points out.

Meanwhile, the current struggles of record 26-time champions Rosenฦ„org perhaps do not help.

โ€œIf one cluฦ„ has the infrastructure and the draw and the culture of possiฦ„ly getting ฦ„ack into the Champions League and staying there it is them ฦ„ut there is a serious reฦ„uild to ฦ„e done there,โ€ says Karlsen.
