Right from birth, little girl Nguyen Thi Loan (Tan Van commune, Lam Ha district, Lam Dong province) had to carry an unusual disease. Her left leg gradually swelled, sometimes growing to half the weight of her entire body. For nearly ten years, my parents sold everything they had, hoping to find hope.
Luck came to Loan when she received support from a Taiwanese business and covered all costs to take Loan “abroad” for medical treatment. With the cooperation of kind hearts, that little girl from the Central Highlands has been on an extraordinary and energetic journey.
Nguyen Thi Loan is the second child of a family in Tan Van, a remote commune of Lam Dong province. Since she was still a fetus, doctors discovered that her left leg was growing abnormally, many times larger than the other side.
The day I was born, before the joy could burst, worry quickly came. Little girl Loan, from the moment she was red, began her journey against the evil disease. Twenty days old, Loan was admitted to Children’s Hospital 2 in Ho Chi Minh City. The left leg gets bigger and bigger each time, the skin becomes tight, causing the baby to cry in pain all day.
The baby’s mother, Ms. Nguyen Thi Tam, and her husband had to sell everything they could sell in the house, carrying each other to Saigon. At first it was the furniture, gradually the house, then the small piece of land in the remote Tan Van commune also invited each other to leave. Ms. Tam had to run around and borrow money from everywhere to have money to treat her child. But Loan’s condition shows no signs of improving. When Loan was 3 years old, the tumor developed a mutation that made her left leg 6-7 times larger than her normal right leg. The elephant’s leg is like a giant block of meat, causing the baby pain and making it impossible to walk.
Only in 2012, when Loan was 8 years old, her left leg weighed… 15kg, while her whole body was only 25kg. Her childhood was closely associated with hospital beds, doctors, the smell of alcohol and severe pain.
The dream of running, jumping, walking leisurely on the street… is completely far away for the child. Besides when she was in the hospital, Loan had low self-esteem and only stayed at home, not daring to go out for fear of people teasing her.
Domestic doctors diagnosed the baby with a rare form of diffuse leukemia that causes unusually large legs, requiring high-tech treatment facilities that domestic facilities currently cannot provide.
At this point, the baby’s mother almost collapsed. Houses, fields, gardens… Everything is gone.
Emigrate
Just when hope seemed lost, a miracle happened. On one occasion, a delegation of the Taiwan Foreign Trade Development Council visited Children’s Hospital 2 in Ho Chi Minh City, Loan’s case became known.
Moved by the girl’s determination, this organization stood as a bridge, along with Hong Phuc Industry Group, a Taiwanese enterprise that has invested for many years in Vietnam, to help her get treatment under the program. medical humanitarian.
In June 2012, the girl who “couldn’t run” Nguyen Thi Loan was able to travel abroad by air for the first time. During the six months of treatment in Taiwan, little Loan underwent 8 surgeries. More than 15kg of excess flesh on the baby’s leg was temporarily removed, and the genitals were also operated on to return to normal.
However, over time, the evil disease has not let Loan go. My left leg continues to swell, the tumor shows no signs of stopping. With the determination to cure the girl, Hong Phuc Group and Taiwanese partners once again sent Loan “abroad”.
Currently, Loan is being treated at Hong Co International Medical Center. According to Taiwanese press, she has completed 3 rounds of treatment. Doctor Tran Hong Co, Director of Hong Co International Medical Center, said: Treatment will be maintained for 6 months to remove large damaged areas on the left leg, and help Loan quickly stabilize. health and normal movement. The entire cost for medical treatment and accommodation is covered by Hong Phuc Group up to 2.5 million NT dollars (17.7 billion VND).
