The Georgia Bulldogs may have lost in the quarterfinals of the College Football Playoff, but Kirby Smart’s already logging major wins off the field.
Georgia’s 23-10 loss to Notre Dame happened for many reasons, but one of the several problems in that contest that plagued the Bulldogs were the drops by the wide receivers (per usual). Coach Smart obviously wanted to take corrective action immediately and did so successfully on Sunday.
Former five star recruit and dynamic wide receiver Zachariah Branch of USC announced that he has committed to Georgia. He brings with him his brother Zion Branch as well, a former four star safety who should add depth to the Bulldogs’ defensive back room as well.
Zachariah Branch flashed potential greatness two seasons in a row for USC as both a receiver and a special weapon in the return game. He scored both a punt and kick return touchdown as a true freshman, tallying nearly 1000 return in yards over the past two seasons. Then of course he also became the leading target for the Trojans this past year, but only managed 520 yards from scrimmage as USC’s offense struggled with consistency.Gunner Stockton–or whoever Kirby Smart and Georgia roll out at QB in 2025–is going to love having Branch as a major upgrade at wide receiver. Bulldogs offensive playmakers dropped 31 balls on the year, one of the worst marks in all of college football, and a couple receivers may be on their way out of the program soon.
Branch has operated as an underneath safety blanket with explosive yards after catch playmaking ability two years in a row now. He seriously averaged 8.3 yards after the catch last season, tied for 5th among all power conference receivers. This is a major win for the Georgia offense as Kirby Smart hopes to get his Bulldogs back to the College Football Playoff next season.
