Kalen DeBoer talks 4th down call, Ty Simpson, Jam Miller, Conor Talty and Alabama’s playoff resume

oint spread released for Alabama vs. Georgia in 2025 SEC championship game

Alabama will be an underdog against Georgia for a sixth consecutive meeting.

Alabama opened Saturday night as a 1.5-point underdog on FanDuel sports book to Georgia in the 2025 SEC championship game.

It would mark the sixth consecutive Alabama meeting with the Bulldogs in which the Tide has been an underdog. Alabama has won four of those previous five games against UGA: the 2021 and 2023 SEC championship games, a regular-season meeting in Tuscaloosa in 2024 and a regular-season game in Athens earlier this season — all as the underdog. The Tide lost the national championship game following the 2021 season to Georgia as an underdog.

The most recent time Alabama was favored over Georgia was a regular-season meeting in 2020 won by Alabama.

Alabama has a 4-0 record in SEC championship games against Georgia, winning in 2012, 2018, 2021 and 2023. Overall, Alabama has won 10 of its past 11 games against Georgia.

Saturday’s SEC title game would mark the eighth time since 2010 that Alabama has been a betting underdog; seven of those games have come against Georgia. The lone exception was the Rose Bowl following the 2023 season, when Alabama lost to favored Michigan.

Kalen DeBoer: Would ‘blow my mind’ if Alabama is left out of playoff after advancing to SEC title game

Alabama faces a potential of a 10-3 record entering the College Football Playoff selection day.

Mike RodakNov 30th, 12:35 PM

With Alabama’s Iron Bowl win Saturday night over Auburn, the Tide clinched a spot in the 2025 SEC championship game next weekend.

But is 10th-ranked Alabama guaranteed a playoff spot no matter the result next Saturday against Georgia? Coach Kalen DeBoer believes his team deserves one.

“I definitely do,” DeBoer said. “I definitely believe we’ve got that type of team. 7-1 in the SEC, with as many ranked teams that we’ve had. And then winning a rivalry game here on the road shows a lot of grit, what this team is all about.”

DeBoer doubled down when asked later in his postgame news conference about the prospect of putting Alabama’s “résumé on the line” by playing a 13th game while SEC teams like Ole Miss (11-1), Texas A&M (11-1) and Oklahoma (10-2) sit idle next weekend with their playoff tickets all but locked up.

“Yeah, I mean, we’re 7-1 in the SEC and I mean — that would blow my mind,” DeBoer said of the prospect of being left out of the playoff with a loss to Georgia. “But I know what you’re getting at. That’s crazy — I’m not saying your question is crazy, but that would be unreal.

“We’re 10-2 and 7-1 in the SEC with all these ranked wins, and some wins on the road. We got more than a playoff caliber football team. There’s not a question in my mind.”

There is not yet precedent in the 12-team playoff era, which began last year, for how the selection committee would handle a team already in the projected playoff field entering the conference title game with two losses that then takes a third loss.

Georgia entered last season’s SEC championship game at 10-2 but beat Texas, which was 11-1. Both teams made the field. Neither Oregon (12-0) nor Penn State (11-1) had two losses entering the Big Ten championship game last year. SMU entered last season’s ACC championship game at 11-1 and ranked No. 8, then dropped to No. 10 — still in the field — at 11-2 after its close loss to Clemson.

The College Football Playoff selection committee will release its final weekly rankings Tuesday evening at 6 p.m. CT. If Alabama remains No. 10 this week, it would mean Alabama could not drop one spot in the final rankings if it lost the SEC championship game and still make the 12-team field, given the final two spots will almost certainly be the final two of the five best conference champions being elevated into playoff spots.

Stick or Flip? The latest on four Alabama commits, additional recruiting notes before the Early Signing Period

Bama247 takes a look at a trio of Alabama commits, who continue to be heavily pursued by other programs, with the Early Signing Period (Dec. 3-5) right around the corner.

The Early Signing Period (Dec. 3-5) is just one day away. A lot of conversations are being held and final decisions being made across the country as recruits gear up to make things official with their respective schools.

Alabama fans saw four-star cornerback Zyan Gibson (Gadsden, AL) — who picked the Crimson Tide on Christmas Eve in 2024 — decommit and recommit within an hour late Sunday night. The longest tenured commit in the class has since confirmed the longtime plans to sign on Dec. 3 at 1 p.m. CT and Bama247 does not expect more dramatics when it comes to that recruitment.
