In one of the most emotionally charged moments of American Idol Season 23, 18-year-old John Foster stepped beyond the spotlight of stardom and into the hearts of millions with a deeply personal original song titled “Tell That Angel I Love Her.”

A native of Addis, Louisiana and an LSU student studying to become an oncologist, Foster used his platform to share a story of loss, remembrance, and hope—dedicating the song to two close friends, Maggie Dunn and Caroline Gill, tragically killed in a high-speed police pursuit on New Year’s Eve 2022.

 A Tribute That Stopped America in Its Tracks

During the Top 20 live performances, Foster stepped on stage armed only with his guitar and a trembling voice full of truth. The lyrics, raw and tender, painted a picture of grief that was universally relatable:

“Each tear that falls on my guitar / Is a hug from afar / Lord, won’t you tell that angel I love her? / As y’all live in the stars.”

As he sang, a hushed stillness overtook the audience. But the performance reached its emotional climax when Foster gently pointed to the crowd—where Maggie’s mother, Erin Martin, stood in tears, hands clasped to her heart.

 A Mother’s Reaction: “My Heart Just Melted”

Speaking with WBRZ, Erin Martin described the moment as deeply moving:

“My heart just melted. For John Foster to make the song at all and then to perform it—it’s an example, a tangible example of the light and love that Maggie left behind.”

Martin recalled Foster and Maggie’s friendship, which began in middle school, and shared a cherished photo of Maggie at John’s very first live performance—a full-circle memory as he wore that same hat during the Idol tribute.

 Beyond the Song: A Call for Change

While the performance was personal, its reach extends far beyond the Idol stage. On the night of the 2022 tragedy, Maggie and Caroline were struck by Officer David Cauthron, who ran a red light at 86 mph during a police chase and failed to brake before impact. Maggie’s brother, Liam, survived but underwent a long recovery.

Cauthron was sentenced to 32 years in prison, with 22 years suspended—ultimately serving 10 years and ordered to speak publicly about the dangers of reckless chases.

Martin hopes Foster’s tribute prompts national attention and policy change:

“For a minute, those millions of people were thinking about my child. Maybe one of those people has the power to effect change when it comes to police pursuit policy.”
