Jack Black says Tenacious D ‘will be back’ with Kyle Gass despite recent backlash

Tenacious D frontman Jack Black has provided an update on his friendship with his band member and longtime friend Kyle Gass following the recent backlash over a controversial Donald Trump comment.

The backlash came after Gass made a joke on stage about the attempted assassination of Donald Trump.

While on tour, performing onstage in Australia last month, Gass made the joke about the shooting of the former president which was quickly met with Black announcing an unexpected stop to the tour.

The Jumanji star also condemned the joke and announced that he would be stepping away from all creative endeavours surrounding the band indefinitely.

Despite the announcements made by both band members stating that all things Tenacious D were on pause, Black has now said that they are “still friends” and the band will “be back.”

“We need to take a break,” Black told Variety at the premiere of his upcoming Borderlands movie.

“Everybody needs a break sometimes,” he added.

However, he continued: “And we’ll be back.”

When asked if he had spoken to Gass following the backlash, Black told Variety: “Yeah, we’re friends.”

He added: “That hasn’t changed.”

“These things take time sometimes… And we’ll be back when it feels right.”

The joke itself came after Black told him to “make a wish” while blowing out candles on his birthday cake.

Gass responded: “Don’t miss Trump next time.”

Shortly after the concert, Black said in a public statement that he was “blindsided by what was said at the show on Sunday.”

He also added that did not “condone hate speech or encourage political violence in any form.”

“After much reflection, I no longer feel it is appropriate to continue the Tenacious D tour, and all future creative plans are on hold,” he added.

“I am grateful to the fans for their support and understanding.”

Gass also released a statement following the backlash, saying in a public statement: “I don’t condone violence of any kind, in any form, against anyone.”

“What happened was a tragedy, and I’m incredibly sorry for my severe lack of judgement.”

“I profoundly apologise to those I’ve let down and truly regret any pain I’ve caused.”

However, his post has since been removed from his Instagram page.

While at the premiere of his Borderlands movie, Black wore the “pick of destiny” pick from his and Gass’ 2007 movie Tenacious D in the Pick of Destiny.

“Look what I wore today: I wore the Pick of Destiny,” he said.

“I love Tenacious D. It’s probably my favourite job, if you can call it that. It’s a work of art, it’s my baby.”
