In a world where challenges often seem insurmountable, the story of Dejana Backo emerges as a testament to the power of resilience, self-discovery, and the indomitable human spirit. Born on December 9, 1994, in Novi Sad, Serbia, Dejana faced the world without upper extremities, yet she has transformed her life into an awe-inspiring journey of artistic and athletic achievements.

As a child, Dejana grappled with questions about why she was born without arms. However, as she matured, she embraced the realization that her disability did not define her. Instead, she discovered an unyielding zest for life that extended beyond her personal challenges. Deeply in love with her partner, a fitness instructor, the couple explores new places and shares their adventures on social media, offering a glimpse into their vibrant life.

Dejana’s artistic journey took flight when she joined the Society of Mouth and Foot Painters at the age of 9. This early exposure fueled her passion for art, leading to her graduation from the Design Art School in 2014 and subsequent enrollment in the Academy of Fine Arts in Novi Sad. Over the years, she has showcased her art in solo exhibitions across nearly 20 cities in the Balkans, leaving an indelible mark on the art world.

Known as the “girl with wings,” Dejana Backo has become a symbol of empowerment and perseverance in Serbia. Her remarkable achievements in sports further amplify her inspirational story. In 2019, she made history by becoming a world champion in para taekwondo at the World Para Taekwondo Championship in Turkey, marking a historic first for Serbia.

In February 2023, Dejana embarked on a new chapter in her life by embracing motherhood, giving birth to her first child. This significant milestone prompted her to take a break from the competitive sports arena, meaning she would miss the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games. Despite this hiatus, Dejana remains active on social media, using her platform to raise awareness about disability-related issues and share her message of empowerment.

While art has always held a special place in Dejana’s heart, her passion for sports has been a driving force. In 2016, she transitioned to Para taekwondo, clinching victory in the K41 women’s −47 kg division. Her achievements speak volumes about her determination to compete on the grand stage of the Paralympic Games.

“We all have some difficulties as people with disabilities,” Dejana candidly acknowledges. “But if you have a good picture of yourself, if you know who you are and what your worth is and you act within that, you can pass all the negatives and focus on the positives.”

The journey into motherhood brings a new set of challenges for Dejana, affecting her sports career. Acknowledging the impact on her training, she plans to take a break but remains confident in her ability to overcome any obstacles that may arise.

In the remarkable narrative of Dejana Backo, we find not just a story of overcoming physical limitations but a celebration of human potential, an exploration of self-worth, and an unwavering spirit that continues to soar, inspiring others to defy the impossible.
