Georgia Bulldogs legend and current Las Vegas Raiders tight end Brock Bowers broke a very old NFL rookie record in Week 17’s win over the New Orleans Saints.
It was Bowers’ third catch of the game that snapped the record for most receiving yards by a rookie tight end in league history, initially set by Chicago Bears tight end Mike Ditka (1,076) back in 1961.
That catch put Bowers at 1,087 receiving yards.
Bowers also built onto the record he broke last week for most catches by a rookie tight end and most catches by any rookie Raider in a single season.
“It’s awesome,” Browers said of breaking Ditka’s record and more. “You never know what to expect coming to the next level and it’s everything and more. It’s been awesome and so proud of the team the whole way. It’s just been a rough start but we’re turning it around now.”
Unlike his fans, Bowers has been surprised by his success in Year 1 and his ability to make the transition to the NFL look easy.
“It’s football, but everyone’s a little bigger, faster, stronger,” Bowers said. “You’re playing in the NFL. It’s what I dreamed of growing up and it’s pretty awesome.”
Bowers finished Sunday reeling in seven catches for 77 yards for a total of 108 receptions and 1,144 receiving yards on the 2024 season so far with one more game left to go.
