Since 2005, the Beaverton brand has honored the African-American community during Black History Month by releasing recurrent clothing and sneaker collections that are included in all of the company’s catalogs. With a decade-long commitment of $140 million in 2020 to community organizations, The Swoosh has gradually transitioned from its renowned regal bundle of ideas to a year-round philanthropic strategy called “Future Movement.”
Because of this, the 2023 BHM campaign is spotlighting five distinct Black people who are pushing the boundaries and exemplifying the principles of putting their health first in order to best serve and progress society, thus intensifying the goal of communal well-being.
The qualities that he’s learnt during his basketball career—”Black Consciousness,” “perspective,” and vulnerability—are what guide the two-time NBA Champion Kevin Durant on his path to wellness. Durant is currently a forward for the Phoenix Suns and is heavily involved with the Durant Family Foundation. Through his philanthropic initiatives, Durant gives the next generation opportunity and tools to monitor their own physical and mental health; these core qualities are directly related to the places the game of basketball has led him.
It’s important to just talk about what’s going through your mind. Your wellbeing is influenced by putting yourself out there and having frank, open discussions with others, according to Durant.
Along with Olympic fencer Daryl Homer, three-time Olympic track and field athlete Anna Cockrell, professional hockey player Saroya Tiker, and rapper Watts Stix, Nike Inc. will continue to invest in and support organizations that fight systemic inequalities through sport and economic empowerment.
