Eagles urged to add former All-Pro wide receiver to aid potential Super Bowl run

The Philadelphia Eagles have been moving the ball at will during their current five-game winning streak, thanks largely to A.J. Brown and a dominant run game that ranks second in the NFL.

Cries for the team to find an upgrade for Jahan Dotson at No. 3 wide receiver have quieted in recent weeks. Dotson now has back-to-back games with a chunk play, and the passing attack should continue to gain traction with Brown, DeVonta Smith and Dallas Goedert all back on the field together.

The Bleacher Report scouting department is doubling down, however, naming WR3 the team’s biggest weakness entering Week 11 of the season.

The site urged the Eagles to add free agent wide receiver Michael Thomas, who was one of the NFL’s young, premier talents at the position in 2019 when he signed a five-year, $96.25 million extension with the New Orleans Saints. His career was derailed by chronic ankle injuries and he’s spent the majority of this season sounding off about Derek Carr on social media.

Here was Bleacher Report’s take on Thomas to Philly: “The Eagles didn’t make a move for a wide receiver at the trade deadline and A.J. Brown has already battled a couple of injuries this season. So, the front office should look into adding a veteran wideout like Thomas ahead of the playoffs. While the 31-year-old has been banged up over the last few years, he’s had plenty of time to heal up and will only have to play about half the season, which should help him stay off the injury report. Additionally, the two-time All-Pro was productive when on the field last season, catching 39 passes for 448 yards in 10 games.”

This one feels like a reach.

Thomas once looked like a future Hall of Famer. He was dominant in his first four seasons, collecting three Pro Bowl invites and a pair of All-Pro nods. He’s not that guy anymore, though, and it’s hard to envision him moving the needle for an Eagles offense that’s already humming.

The fact that Thomas never landed with a team in 2024 should be a red flag. He was also slapped with a one-game suspension by the NFL this offseason for violating the league’s personal conduct policy.

There’s a reason cries to replace Dotson have quieted. He’s a young guy who’s easy to root for. He’s kept his head down and hasn’t complained about seeing one or two targets per game. He also appears to be developing a rapport with Jalen Hurts, snagging catches of 36 and 27 yards in back-to-back weeks.

The Eagles are 7-2 atop the NFC East entering Week 11. They have superstar talent all over their offense. No. 3 wide receiver will not make or break this Eagles season, and that includes potentially adding the 31-year-old Thomas.

The Verdict: Pass
