In a heartwarming display of community leadership, Detroit Tigers captain Miguel Cabrera, alongside teammates Spencer Torkelson, Riley Greene, and Javier Báez, has invested a substantial $750,000 to convert a vacant house in Detroit into a shelter for homeless seniors. The announcement, made on April 9, 2025, comes amid a challenging season for the Tigers, who are 8-5 after a recent 6-4 loss to the New York Yankees. But off the field, Cabrera and his teammates are hitting a home run with this initiative, earning praise from fans and local leaders alike for addressing a critical issue in Michigan.
The project, dubbed “Tigers Haven,” will transform a 5,000-square-foot property in Detroit’s Corktown neighborhood into a 15-bed shelter specifically for seniors over 65 who are experiencing homelessness. According to the Michigan Coalition Against Homelessness, over 2,000 seniors in the state were homeless in 2024, a number that has risen sharply due to increasing housing costs and limited fixed incomes. Cabrera, a 41-year-old future Hall of Famer who has called Detroit home since 2008, said the cause is personal. “I’ve seen too many older people struggling on the streets here,” he shared in a press conference. “They deserve a safe place to live with dignity. This is our way of giving back.”
The $750,000 investment, funded entirely by the players, will cover the purchase of the property, renovations, and initial operating costs for the first year. Renovations, set to begin in May 2025, will include installing accessible bathrooms, a communal kitchen, and a small medical room for basic care. Torkelson, who recently donated his entire bonus to charity, emphasized the team’s commitment. “We’re not just writing a check—we’re going to be hands-on, visiting, and making sure this place feels like a home,” he said. Greene and Báez, both of whom have been active in Detroit’s community outreach, will also help furnish the shelter and connect with local nonprofits to provide ongoing support.
