Detroit Tigers Bring Joy and Hope to Young Patients at Children’s Hospital of Michigan
Detroit, MI – May 13, 2025
In a moment that lifted spirits and reminded everyone of the power of kindness, several players from the Detroit Tigers made a surprise visit to the Children’s Hospital of Michigan this week—bringing smiles, signed baseballs, and something even more valuable: hope.
Leading the heartwarming visit were Riley Greene, Tarik Skubal, and team favorite Miguel Cabrera, who returned as a Tigers ambassador. As the players entered the pediatric oncology wing, patients and their families couldn’t hold back their joy and emotion.
“It’s the best day I’ve had in months,” said 9-year-old leukemia patient Liam Carter, who received a signed glove and a one-on-one catch with Greene in the hallway.
More Than Just an Autograph
But the Tigers didn’t just come to sign gear. They came with good news—announcing a $500,000 donation from the team’s charitable foundation to fund specialized pediatric treatment and recreational activities for long-term patients.
“We’re not just here to play ball. We’re here to be part of the Detroit community,” said Skubal. “These kids are fighters. They’re the real heroes.”
Doctors and hospital staff were equally moved by the gesture, praising the Tigers not just for their generosity, but for their time and genuine connection with the kids.
A Visit Full of Unforgettable Moments
One of the most touching scenes of the day came when Miguel Cabrera visited Emma Rojas, a 7-year-old girl undergoing her third round of chemotherapy. Upon hearing she was a big fan of his, Cabrera walked in holding a tiny Tigers jersey with her name stitched on the back.
“She hasn’t smiled like that in weeks,” her mother whispered, holding back tears.
Another young patient, 11-year-old Jordan Michaels, was given a once-in-a-lifetime invitation—to throw the ceremonial first pitch at an upcoming Tigers game this summer.
Tigers’ Message: “You’re Not Alone”
Team manager A.J. Hinch, who also attended the visit, emphasized that the Tigers will continue to show up for their city.
“These children are going through unimaginable challenges. If we can give them a moment of joy or inspiration—then we’ve done something right.”
The visit ended with a group photo, the sound of laughter echoing down the hospital halls, and one resounding truth: sometimes the biggest wins happen off the field.
From the dugout to the hospital room, the Detroit Tigers proved once again why they are more than a baseball team—they’re a symbol of hope for the entire city.
