The Kansas City Royals made a late addition to their roster on Friday. KC acquired veteran outfielder Mark Canha from the Milwaukee Brewers, a source confirmed to The Star.

Canha, 36, joined the Brewers on a minor-league deal this offseason. He owns a career .349 on-base percentage in 10 MLB seasons. The Royals will send a player to be named later in the deal.

MLB insider Mark Feinsand added that Canha had an opt-out clause in his minor-league deal with the Brewers.

This spring, Canha appeared in nine games with the Brewers. He recorded a home run, two RBIs and four walks in 23 at-bats.

KC has looked for a veteran bench bat. Canha is expected to be on the active roster ahead of opening day on March 27 against the Cleveland Guardians.

Canha has played for five teams in his career. Last season, he hit .242 with seven home runs and 42 RBIs with the Detroit Tigers and San Francisco Giants.

So how will Canha contribute to the final roster?

He is likely to have a key bench role alongside backup catcher Freddy Fermin and outfielder Dairon Blanco. The Royals will have one more bench spot to fill as spring training commences next week.

The final roster spot could involve multiple players. The Royals have a list of guys that can earn the role. Outfielders Nelson Velázquez and Nick Pratto are out of minor-league options and could be designated for assignment.

Meanwhile, super utility players Nick Loftin, Harold Castro and Cavan Biggio each offer defensive versatility. Castro and Biggio are both left-handed infielders and Loftin has impressed in limited action with the club.

The Royals will evaluate the final roster spot in the upcoming days. For now, Canha adds another veteran option to strengthen the roster.
