American Idol Season 23 took a dramatic turn during the May 5, 2025 episode, as the Top 8 contestants hit the stage for the much-anticipated Judges’ Song Contest. In this unique round, each judge selected a song for every contestant based on their vocal style and artistry — but the ultimate decision rested with the singers themselves.

After a night of emotional performances and vocal showdowns, six contestants advanced directly to the Top 7 thanks to America’s votes:

That left Mattie Pruitt and Josh King in the bottom two — and only one could be saved.

Judges Choose Mattie — and the Internet Reacts

Because judges Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie tied in the Judges’ Song Contest, they were granted the power to save one of the bottom two contestants. After conferring and declining input from fellow judge Carrie Underwood, they chose to save Mattie, sending Josh home.

While some fans agreed with the decision, others were furious, taking to X (formerly Twitter) to voice their opinions. The reaction was fast, loud, and deeply divided.

The competition continues on Sunday, May 11, with a magical Disney Night + Mother’s Day celebration. The Top 7 will perform Disney classics and tributes to their moms in an emotional two-night special.

Then on May 12, Broadway legend Lin-Manuel Miranda will step in to mentor the finalists as America votes for the Top 5, setting the stage for the May 18 finale, where the Top 3 will compete for the win.
