If weโre being literal, the hills above western Los Angeles are actually the only place where Jennifer Aniston is the girl next door. Thatโs what people called her for a long time. The girl next door, which is a โ90s euphemism that means sheโs unintimidating, approachable. But here, along avenues of impermeable iron gates, among houses hidden behind hedges grown to make sure you know your place, the vibe is pretty intimidating. To live here, one assumes, you have to have achieved a certain kind of Olympian status, like having been among the most beloved figures in American pop culture for 30 years.
This is what Iโm thinking when the gates to her house swing open and I enter onto a pea stone car park. Pruned trees, gurgling fountains, 500-foot-tall front doors. Then suddenly, thereโs a lot of barking and Anistonโs familiar voice, somewhere inside, reprimanding her dogs. When she opens the door โ ripped jeans, tank top, barefoot โ Aniston looks like she could be the ownerโs out-of-town friend crashing here for a few days.

She welcomes me into the house, which looks like a comfortable art gallery and smells like a box of new shoes transported in a Louis Vuitton steamer trunk full of gardenias. โExcuse my frazzledness,โ she says, seeming pretty unfrazzled, as we walk into her kitchen. โI just had a whole thing happen at work.โ Sheโs in the middle of filming the third season of The Morning Show. โI just [found out I] have a few pages to learn of a huge interview scene.โ
โOur interview can be a dry run,โ I propose.
โYes, this will be my dry โ exactly. Thatโs exactly right.โ Aniston at her most Aniston. Itโs that thing she does. She murmur repeats โ part bumbling professor, part conspiratorial best friend.
Immediately, sheโs welcoming: โCan I make you a shake? Iโm having a shake.โ I am not about to refuse a homemade shake from Jennifer Aniston. Sure. Great.
โI want to introduce you to my dogs.โ She opens the door to where theyโve been relegated. โClyde is amazing, but Chesterfield gets barky. You have to ignore him. Even if he licks your hand and youโre like, โOh, thereโs my in,โ he will jump and it seems scary.โ I do as Iโm told: aloof and indifferent. I could be a French waiter.
โOkay, Iโm making us a shake. Here we go.โ I lean against her kitchen island and watch as Aniston begins to assemble the ingredients. Back and forth to the refrigerator, in and out of cabinets, collecting little containers of powders and a thing of nuts and then ground-up some- things and thereโs a banana and then shavings of something elses. Am I okay with chocolate-flavored things? โYep, but Iโm a vegetarian so just no bacon, please.โ
โHa! Iโm not going to put the bacon in! Iโll leave out the bacon. Iโll leave out the bacon.โ Murmur, repeat, perfect timing.โLet me blend this. Hold on.โ She blends. Chesterfield โ a big white husky? shepherd? lab mix? โ starts barking. She pours two tall glasses of smoothie. โWhoa, I hope you like sweet things,โ she says. โCheers.โ

We move to the living room โ and step into two sides of Jennifer Aniston. Thereโs a wall of artwork and floor-to-ceiling windows. But there are also dog beds, a giant sofa with a slipcover, and a really casual vibe. Sheโs not a coaster person. Aniston sits on the floor and Chesterfield jumps on the couch next to me.
Earlier I was texting a journalist friend of mine. I told him I was interviewing Aniston and I asked him to give me smart things to say. โOne thought is this,โ he texted. โNo oneโs ever going to be famous the way she is. That kind of mass-fame phenomenon burning so bright for so long, itโs just not achievable today. Sheโs like a silent-film star among a generation of TikTok dipshits.โ
I read her the text. โWhoa. Oh, that just gave me chills,โ she says. โIโm a little choked up. I feel like itโs dying. There are no more movie stars. Thereโs no more glamour. Even the Oscar parties used to be so fun….โ
Thereโs something thatโs distracting me. Yes, I do have the feeling that whenever Jennifer Aniston fades into posterity (something that doesnโt seem imminent; she has two new movies coming out, and the third season of The Morning Show), the station of movie star will be diminished. But itโs not that. Itโs her hair. Her hair is the second most famous thing in this house. You could say her hair was the second most famous thing on Friends. I can see the nuances, the parts of each strand that change to gold as she moves her head. Itโs a little unsettling. Like seeing your own reflection in Tom Cruiseโs aviators.

About a year ago, Aniston launched a hair-care line, LolaVie, with a simple and ambitious mission: โCreate a product that is good for the environment, good for our hair, take out all the crappy chemicals, and have it perform,โ says Aniston.
Then she says, โI hate social media.โ This is unexpected. What do you mean? โIโm not good at it.โ This seems…counterintuitive. As you may be aware, about three years ago, Aniston joined Instagram. She opened an account, posted a photo of the cast of Friends, and in the following hours, the platform rushed to accommodate so many thousands of Jennifer Aniston followers that it crashed. Is that what she means by not being good at it? Like, is it hard because youโre too popular? Like in a job interview when they ask you your biggest weakness and you say I guess I work too hard sometimes?
โItโs torture for me. The reason I went on Instagram was to launch this line,โ she explains. โThen the pandemic hit and we didnโt launch. So I was just stuck with being on Instagram. It doesnโt come naturally.โ
I ask her about this. How, to people like us, who came of age before InstaChat and SnapTube and FaceTik, social media can seem unnecessarily punitive, like checking in with the meanest girl from high school every 10 minutes to confirm youโre still a loser.
โIโm really happy that we got to experience growing up, being a teenager, being in our 20s without this social media aspect,โ she says. โLook, the internet, great intentions, right? Connect people socially, social networking. It goes back to how young girls feel about themselves, compare and despair.
โI feel the best in who I am today, better than I ever did in my 20s or 30s even, or my mid-40s. We needed to stop saying bad shit to ourselves,โ says Aniston, scolding her future self: โYouโre going to be 65 one day and think, I looked fucking great at 53.โ Something in her tone makes me think that this isnโt a typical โIโm proud of my wrinkles and gray hairโ platitude. This goes deeper.

โI would say my late 30s, 40s, Iโd gone through really hard shit, and if it wasnโt for going through that, I wouldโve never become who I was meant to be,โ she says. โThatโs why I have such gratitude for all those shitty things. Otherwise, I wouldโve been stuck being this person that was so fearful, so nervous, so unsure of who they were.โ She finishes her smoothie and reaches out to Chesterfield. โAnd now, I donโt fucking care.โ
Maybe I look confused. She explains.
โI was trying to get pregnant. It was a challenging road for me, the baby-making road,โ says Aniston, of a period several years ago.
On the scale of dumb things to say, this is the moment when I really hit it out of the park. โI had no idea.โ
โYeah, nobody does,โ she replies graciously. โAll the years and years and years of speculation… It was really hard. I was going through IVF, drinking Chinese teas, you name it. I was throwing everything at it. I wouldโve given anything if someone had said to me, โFreeze your eggs. Do yourself a favor.โ You just donโt think it. So here I am today. The ship has sailed.โ
We sit quietly for a minute, maybe sad for all the ships that have ever sailed. I almost want to apologize to Aniston for being a journalist. This doesnโt feel like any of my business.
โI have zero regrets,โ she says. โI actually feel a little relief now because there is no more, โCan I? Maybe. Maybe. Maybe.โ I donโt have to think about that anymore.โ
Back then โ and for years โ there were headlines swirling through pop culture that Aniston wouldnโt have kids. That she wasnโt interested or she just wanted to be a star or whatever idea was selling that week.
Adding to the personal pain of what she went through was the โnarrative that I was just selfish,โ she says. โI just cared about my career. And God forbid a woman is successful and doesnโt have a child. And the reason my husband left me, why we broke up and ended our marriage, was because I wouldnโt give him a kid. It was absolute lies. I donโt have anything to hide at this point.โ

I have flashes of every magazine rack, every airport newsstand. Those โJen Has a Baby Bump!โ or equivalent headlines were everywhere (including Allure). We all felt entitled to the cellular happenings inside her uterus. We consumed those headlines, then dropped them in the trash and got back to our lives. But she couldnโt.
โI got so frustrated. Hence that op-ed I wrote [for The Huffington Post in 2016, slamming the media for its obsession with her being pregnant and its treatment of women, generally]. I was like, โIโve just got to write this because itโs so maddening and Iโm not superhuman to the point where I canโt let it penetrate and hurt.โโ
Chesterfield is back on the couch, trying to curl up on my leg.
โI think my momโs divorce really screwed her up,โ Aniston says when I ask her about growing up. โBack in that generation it wasnโt like, โGo to therapy, talk to somebody. Why donโt you start microdosing?โ Youโre going through life and picking up your child with tears on your face and you donโt have any help.โ
Chesterfield nudges deeper onto my lap. Aniston pulls him off. โCome here, baby,โ she says. โI know you want to, but you just canโt lick people.โ Itโs one thing to be a dog person, but Aniston is next level.
โI forgave my mom,โ she continues, getting back to her human family. โI forgave my father. Iโve forgiven my family.โ (Aniston was estranged from her mother for years.)
Who among us hasnโt tried โ successfully or not โ to forgive our family? You in the back, put your hand down. Youโre lying to yourself. Families are things to be forgiven.
โItโs important,โ she says. โItโs toxic to have that resentment, that anger. I learned that by watching my mom never let go of it. I remember saying, โThank you for showing me what never to be.โ So thatโs what I mean about taking the darker things that happen in our lives, the not-so-happy moments, and trying to find places to honor them because of what they have given to us.โ

One of the things her parentsโ divorce gave her was motivation to leave. โMy house was not a fun house to live in,โ she says, about her familyโs apartment in New York City. โI was thrilled to get out.โ
After graduating from LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts in New York City, Aniston worked as a waitress at Jackson Hole diner on the Upper West Side, and at an ice cream place in Lincoln Center. (โIโd make a shake and if there was leftover…? I finished it. Why waste this? I was rounder then,โ she says, arching her eyebrow.) Eventually, โI moved to California.โ She arrived in Los Angeles โthe summer of 1989, which was yesterday,โ she says. โI walked into a party in Laurel Canyon. This girl says, โCome with us. Weโre doing a circle.โ I was like, โWhatโs a circle?โ It was all women and they saged you before you went in. Then a talking stick, Iโm sure with feathers on it. The women call in the four directions, and Iโm like, โWhat the fuck is going on? Am I in a cult?โ Hours later, woman after woman, just speaking, sharing thoughts and fears, worries. How incredible women are for each other. Thatโs how I got into that world, which I guess would be called Woo Woo. It was very Woo Woo.โ
The women of the Woo Woo circle remain her closest friends. She met the woman who would become her producing partner that night. All around Anistonโs house are framed photos of these women โ hiking, traveling, smiling, sharing their lives, this close-knit coven of old friends. Students of Friends (and whatever you think of them, they are legion โ just witness the cultural juggernaut that was the Friends reunion last year) will know that the showโs premise was about that time in life when friends are family. Aniston is a case of life imitating art.
โI remember in high school doing a Chekhov play,โ she says. โIt wasnโt funny, and I was making it funny. And my teacher said, โWhy donโt you just be funny because you have it in you?โ And I was like, โHow dare you? Iโm a dramatic actress!โ Turns out, it was the thing that saved my life, comedy. It was a salve to make people laugh.โ
โThere are people who say that watching Friends has saved them during cancer diagnosis, or so many people with just so much gratitude for a little show,โ she says, her eyes glassy with tears. โWe really loved each other and we took care of each other. I donโt know why it still resonates; there are no iPhones. Itโs just people talking to each other. Nobody talks to each other anymore.โ
โ
It would be wonderful to come home and fall into somebodyโs arms and say, โThat was a tough day.โโ
Well, weโve come this far. โWould you ever get married again?โ
โNever say never, but I donโt have any interest,โ she says. โIโd love a relationship. Who knows? There are moments I want to just crawl up in a ball and say, โI need support.โ It would be wonderful to come home and fall into somebodyโs arms and say, โThat was a tough day.โโ
Smoothies long gone, Aniston gives me a tour of the house. Imagine soaring views and spiritual shrines tucked into corners. We walk into the dining room with its majestic table, heavy art books, charcoal walls. A few paint swatches are affixed to the wall. All in identical shades of charcoal. I donโt get it.
โYou canโt see the difference?โ she says. Youโd think I just told her how much I love the emperorโs splendid new clothing. โReally? You canโt see how blue this one is?โ This is paint swatch gaslighting. Paintswatching.
โI would love to be an interior designer. I love walking into a house thatโs being torn apart and finding ways to put it back together,โ she tells me, escorting us into her own personal metaphor.
โI feel like Iโm coming through a period that was challenging and coming back into the light,โ she says. โI have had to do personal work that was long overdue, parts of me that hadnโt healed from the time I was a little kid. Iโm a very independent person. Intimacy has always been a little here,โ she extends her hand an armโs length in front of her. โIโve realized you will always be working on stuff. I am a constant work in progress. Thank God. How uninteresting would life be if we all achieved enlightenment and that was it?โ

Coming out on the other side is what she calls โa little mosaic. It gets blown apart and then somehow gets put back together into this beautiful mosaic.โ
I think of all the gossip and schadenfreude, all the hysterical tabloid exclamation points, the clickbait. I think of all the crap the world has thrown at Aniston โ and I feel like she must have a really good therapist if she can find a โbeautiful mosaicโ anywhere in it. But maybe thatโs the point. We all break. Then the benevolent forces of the universe sweep in and collect our broken parts, our flaws and jagged edges, and turn them into works of art. Maybe thatโs why our 40s feel more powerful than our 20s: The universe needs time to assemble our mosaics.
โI didnโt want to partner with someone until some of that work was done. It wouldnโt be fair,โ she says. โI donโt want to move into a house when there are no walls.โ
โYou felt like you had no walls?โ
โIt was terrible,โ she says.
We walk outside. Anistonโs backyard is a small botanical garden with olive trees, a dusty path to the chicken coop, and a feeling of total privacy. Across the yard from the main house is a small cottage thatโs about 90 percent windows. โWelcome to the Babe Cave,โ she says. โThis was Justinโs office.โ (Aniston and her ex-husband Justin Theroux split up in 2017.) โYou can imagine he likes things black and dark.โ After he moved out, โI lightened it up, stripped it all. He came over [the other day] and was like, โWhat the fuck did you do?โ I said, โI brought the light back in, buddy.โโ
The view, the furniture, the palpable calm โ you could write the story of your life in a room like this.
โIโm going to do that one day,โ she says. โIโm going to stop saying, โI canโt write.โโ We walk back out to the garden. โIโve spent so many years protecting my story about IVF. Iโm so protective of these parts because I feel like thereโs so little that I get to keep to myself. The [world] creates narratives that arenโt true, so I might as well tell the truth. I feel like Iโm coming out of hibernation. I donโt have anything to hide.โ
โIf you were writing the story of your life,โ I ask, โwhat would you call this chapter?โ
โWhat would you call this chapter?โ Murmur, repeats. We look out at Los Angeles, blurry in the late afternoon smog.
She smiles. Sheโs got it. โPhoenix Rising.โ
