Penn State and James Franklin have taken full advantage of the offseason’s open recruiting period, which started on Jan. 6. Franklin and his staff have been all over the country visiting top prospects and signees, including recently at an important in-state target’s place.
Franklin and tight ends coach Ty Howle stopped in to see Nazareth 2026 four-star quarterback Peyton Falzone on Tuesday. Falzone is ranked by the 247Sports Composite as the nation’s 15th-best quarterback, while he’s visited Penn State twice thus far.
On Monday, Falzone got an up-close experience with a name important to Penn State’s current roster. Falzone worked with Drew Allar’s quarterback training Brad Maendlar on a trip to Ohio. Maendlar has also worked with Penn State freshman Ethan Grunkemeyer. On Monday, New Orleans Saint wider receiver Mason Tipton was catching passes for Falzone. Seems like a pretty good week on the recruiting trail for Penn State’s pursuit of Falzone.
The 6-5, 200-pound signal caller also ranks as Pennsylvania’s No. 7 prospect in the 2026 class. He was committed to Virginia Tech for a few months, from June to November, before backing off his commitment and opening things back up. Penn State already has four-star quarterback Troy Huhn, the nation’s No. 12 quarterback, committed in the class but clearly would be open to adding another passer.
On a fun note, this wouldn’t be the first time in recent history Penn State pulled a quarterback commit away from Virginia Tech. You might have heard of someone named Tyler Warren, who was committed to Virginia Tech from August 2018 to May 2019. He then signed with the Nittany Lions in the class of 2020, converted to tight end and became one of the most legendary players in program history.
