BREAKING: Washington Commanders Reach First NFC Championship Since 1991, But Lose Late Pillar Sam Cosmi

The Washington Commanders pulled off a remarkable upset in the NFL with a 45-31 victory over the top-ranked Detroit Lions on Saturday night. The victory sent the Commanders to their first NFC Championship since 1991, their last Super Bowl season.

However, the victory was not complete. Head coach Dan Quinn confirmed that late pillar Sam Cosmi will miss the rest of the season due to an ACL injury suffered during Saturday night’s game.

“It’s very sad for Sam. The ACL injury will keep him away from us for the rest of the season,” Quinn said Sunday. “He’s been a big part of this group, not only in his on-field ability but also as an asset mentally.”

Sam Cosmi Sends Emotional Message to Fans

On his personal Instagram page, Cosmi shared his feelings on Sunday afternoon:

“Knocked down, but never defeated.

This season has been a dream for me. Seeing the DMV so proud after years of waiting has brought me so much joy. Playing alongside my brothers every day, fighting for something bigger than myself, is something I am so grateful for. It really breaks my heart that my season has ended early, but I know our journey is not over. Let’s bring home a championship, boys.

Commanders nation, see you next season.

Trials to testimonies.”

Cosmi was a second-round pick in the 2021 Draft and has been playing consistently since entering the NFL. The 2024 season will be his first at right guard, and he has a 73.3 pass-blocking grade according to Pro Football Focus, which ranks 14th in the NFL.

Replacement: Trent Scott

Trent Scott, a seven-year NFL veteran, is expected to replace Cosmi at right guard. Scott played for a number of teams, including the Los Angeles Chargers, Carolina Panthers, and Pittsburgh Steelers, before joining the Commanders in 2023. He has started 23 of 88 games so far.

There’s no doubt that losing a name like Cosmi will make it difficult for the Commanders to maintain their offensive game. However, with a determined spirit and a team in sync, this historic run is still promising.
