The Ohio State Buckeyes are preparing for a first-round matchup against the Tennessee Volunteers in the College Football Playoff this coming weekend, looking to turn their season around and go on a national championship run.
The last time the Buckeyes were on the field, they suffered one of the worst losses in program history, falling to the Michigan Wolverines for the fourth straight year. It was a result that has left many Ohio State fans calling for head coach Ryan Day’s job, with the common thought being that they only thing that could keep Day in Columbus through the offseason is a championship this year.
According to Day, though, the Buckeyes have already achieved what they set out for this year — making the 12-team College Football Playoff. In a recent interview leading up to the game, Day revealed that the playoff was always the goal.
“The goal all along was to make the playoffs,” Day said to 10TV in Columbus. “Well, we’re here.”
Day goes on to say that the Buckeyes season has been a major success with 10 wins, a pair of top-five wins, and a place in the playoff after a year that featured a new Big Ten Conference. He also pointed out that injuries were a major reason for why his team did not perform as well as expected.
Ohio State fans don’t appear to agree on social media, though. Some of them had a visceral response to seeing this clip online.
Whether or not Day keeps his job at Ohio State beyond this year is impossible to know at this point, but if the Buckeyes do end up parting ways with him at the end of a season that ends with anything short of a national championship, it’s pretty clear that a large portion of Ohio State fans will be very happy with the decision.
