Georgia Bulldogs tight end Lawson Luckie put his leadership skills on full display in Georgia’s 34-20 win over the Florida Gators on Saturday when he attempted to stop running back Nate Frazier from celebrating in the end zone.
Frazier, a true freshman, had scored Georgia’s fir
st touchdown of the game and mocked Todd Gurley’s gator chomp and throat-slash celebration.
The throat slash resulted in a 15-yard taunting penalty and turned Kirby Smart’s face bright red.
An up-close video of Frazier showed that Lawson had attempted to stop his teammate from doing the throat slash, knowing what the outcome would bring.
Several of Frazier’s teammates, including Jalon Walker, also gave him a hard time before he reached a very heated coach Smart.
After the game, Smart told reporters what he said to Frazier.
“Just told him don’t be stupid, man,” Smart said. “We’re not selfish people at Georgia. We don’t, I mean, I’m not interested in all the shenanigans. We’re meat and potatoes. We roll our sleeves up, we go to work every day. I’m not interested in you gator-chomping and throat-slashing. It’s not respectful. I mean, I want to be respectful of the game and the people we play. And I think the best way to attack somebody is beat them.”
Smart said he knew Frazier wasn’t trying to draw a penalty but blamed his thought process on being young and immature.
“I mean, he’s got to grow up,” Smart said. “I mean, we’ve been trying to grow him up the whole time. It’s probably me more than anything. Josh (Crawford) does a good job trying to get him in there. We’ve got to show confidence in him and play because a back can’t make it through this league trying to do it by himself.”
Aside from his end zone shenanigans, Frazier had a solid night and led the backfield with 19 carries for 82 yards and a score after being forced to step up in place of an injured Trevor Etienne.
As for Luckie, he had just one catch for 21 yards but his attempt to stop Frazier from costing the team some yards meant much more than anything he could have logged on paper that night.
