Vin Diesel gets emotional when discussing working alongside his 10-year-old son Vincent in F9: The Fast Saga

The Fast and the Furious franchise has always been about family, but that may have been truer than ever in the upcoming F9: The Fast Saga.

Vin Diesel stopped by The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Tuesday to promote the new film, in theaters June 25, where he opened up about working with his 10-year-old son Vincent in the movie.

The xXx star got emotional when talking about working alongside his son, along with his co-star Jordana Brewsterโ€™s son Jordan in the high-octane sequel.

When Fallon mentioned his son Vincent, he leapt out of his seat, dabbing tears from his eyes, before saying that it actually wasnโ€™t his idea to put Vincent in the movie.

โ€˜First off, it wasnโ€™t my idea, it was Justin Lin, the director. Weโ€™ve been making these movies for so long that every time one of my children were born, I was usually working on a Fast & Furious movie.โ€™

โ€˜The thing I remember the most was coming home that day, because when you see the movie, itโ€™s kind of a deep scene so Dom is in a deep state of mind,โ€™ Diesel adds.

โ€˜My son was watching me work the whole day and it wasnโ€™t until I got home that I saw a twinkle in his eye because he had finally seen his father come home, opposed to being with Dom Toretto the whole day.โ€

Tuesday also marked the exact 20th anniversary of the franchiseโ€™s first film, 2001โ€™s The Fast and the Furious, hitting theaters, which was astonishing to Diesel.

โ€˜If you would have told me 20 years from now weโ€™d be here, 20 years ago I would have thought you were crazy,โ€™ Diesel said.

โ€˜My approach at the time was a lot of tough love to assist in getting that performance where it needed to be,โ€™ he added.

โ€˜As a producer to say, โ€œOkay, weโ€™re going to take Dwayne Johnson, whoโ€™s associated with wrestling, and weโ€™re going to force this cinematic world, audience members, to regard his character as someone that they donโ€™t knowโ€™ โ€“ Hobbs hits you like a ton of bricks,โ€™ he said.

โ€˜Thatโ€™s something that Iโ€™m proud of, that aesthetic. That took a lot of work. We had to get there and sometimes, at that time, I could give a lot of tough love. Not Felliniesque, but I would do anything Iโ€™d have to do in order to get performances in anything Iโ€™m producing,โ€™ he added.
