Shakira prepares for an emotional performance during the tribute

The famous Colombian artist is scheduled to be honored with the prestigious Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award.

Shakira’s fans are eagerly anticipating her upcoming moment on September 12th when she will receive the prestigious Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award at the MTV Video Music Awards.

The singer, aged 46, is also eagerly looking forward to the event as she is currently in the midst of preparing for her Video Vanguard medley performance that night. It is expected that she will be showcasing some of her biggest hits, such as “Hips Don’t Lie” and “She Wolf.”

To give her fans a sneak peek into her choreography rehearsals, Shakira posted some glimpses on Instagram, showcasing her body contorting into intense shapes. For her practice session, she prioritized comfort by wearing leggings and a loose tee, along with knee pads and heeled sock boots to practice performing in heels.

She teased her fans by asking them to guess which song the pose was from and expressed her excitement for Tuesday night. The comments section was buzzing with anticipation for her performance, with comments ranging from excitement to admiration for the singer’s upcoming show.

The Colombian superstar has become the 36th artist to be honored with a prestigious VMA award since its establishment in 1984, joining legendary acts such as Madonna, Michael Jackson, The Beatles, Britney Spears, and her Super Bowl Halftime Show co-headliner Jennifer Lopez.

The most recent recipient of the award was Nicki Minaj in 2022, who also hosted the ceremony that year. Nicki is set to host this year’s MTV VMAs as well.

Bruce Gilmer, Paramount’s president of music, music talent, programming and events, and Paramount+’s chief content officer for music, stated in a press release: “Shakira is a true global force who continues to inspire and influence the masses with her unique, musical prowess.”

Shakira is being recognized for her nearly two decades of influence in music and music videos. She is celebrated as a trailblazer for women worldwide and one of the pioneers in globalizing Latin music. Her significant impact on the music industry will leave a lasting legacy as she continues to create and entertain at the highest level.

Shakira’s upcoming performance at the VMAs will be her first in 17 years, since her memorable rendition of “Hips Don’t Lie” with Wyclef Jean in 2006. This milestone also solidifies her as the first South American artist to receive the Video Vanguard Award and the second Latina artist after JLo’s win in 2018.

The spirited singer has previously won four Moon Person trophies and is nominated for four more this year, including the coveted Artist of the Year award. Taylor Swift leads the nominations this year with eight nods.

Other musicians who have obtained numerous nominations this year include SZA with six; Doja Cat, Kim Petras, Miley Cyrus, Nicki Minaj, Olivia Rodrigo, and Sam Smith with five each; and BLACKPINK and this year’s Global Icon honoree Diddy with three nominations.
