Former Dancing With The Stars Judge Paul Mercurio Praises Robert Irwin For His DWTS US Debut

We might be used to seeing Robert Irwin next to Julia Morris on I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here!, but the wildlife warrior is showing an all-new side of himself on the US version of Dancing With The Stars.

On Tuesday night (US time) — or Wednesday morning for the Aussies — the 22-year-old took to the floor for the very last time for the season finale of Dancing With The Stars season 34.

Below, we’ve compiled all of Robert’s dances and scores in one place.

In the long-awaited season finale of Dancing With The Stars season 34, Robert and Witney are performing three (yes, three!!) dances.

The first one was assigned to them by judge Derrek Hough who tasked them with performing a quick step to Jet’s “Are You Gonna Be My Girl”.

While they did an amazing job — especially considering Robert’s rib injury — judge Carrie Ann pointed out a bit of a fumble made my Robert after he came out of a kick. Despite this, Carrie awarded the couple a nine, with Derrek and Bruno giving them a 10/10. That leaves them with a 29/30 for dance number one!

Next up is the instant dance. This is where the finalists discover which dance style they must improvise to five minutes before they perform.

Much to his trepidation, Robert chose the Cha Cha which he will perform to “Cake By The Ocean” by DNCE.

“So much cleaner, your placement was so much better. Your finish was so much better. You were on fire!” exclaimed Bruno.

“I was nervous for you for that one,” said Derrek. “But it was honestly so incredibly impressive. That dance is so hard and you guys did fantastic!”

With such glowing responses, it’s no surprise that the judges gave Robert 10s across the board!

Can you believe we’re at the semi-finals already? Tragic! We don’t want it to end!

Thankfully, now that we’re at the pointy end, each couple is doing two dances rather than one. Plus, this week is Prince Night, meaning that the six remaining teams will pay tribute to the iconic “Purple Rain” singer.

Robert and Witney kicked off their performances with a super energetic jive to “Baby I’m A Star”, which many fans online labelled “the best dance of the night”.

“Only a superstar jive would do,” said judge Bruno. “You did that.”

The judges awarded them a juicy 30/30!

Robert and Witney closed out the night with their Viennese waltz.

“That was a ferocious Viennese Waltz. Every fiber of your body dances,” said judge Derek.

The judges awarded them an almost perfect score of 29/30.

Grab your tissues because this week’s dance is not only tribute to Robert’s dad, Aussie icon Steve Irwin, but inspired by a dance performed on the show by his sister Bindi 10 years prior.

“Tonight, my foxtrot dance is inspired by my sister and it’s in memory of my dad,” Robert wrote on TikTok. “My family is everything to me, and I can’t wait for this special night.”

Dressed in gorgeous cream outfits, Robert and his partner Witney took to the stage to dance a Foxtrot to Leona Lewis’ track “Footprints in the sand”. It was a touching, heart-filled performance that had the audience hooked on Robert and Witney’s every movement.

You can check it out below.

Once they’d finished their dance, Bindi was brought onto the stage to hear the judges critiques.

“It was a poetic, touching tribute that really touched all of us. I could not take my eyes off you,” said Bruno.

“This dance was so powerful, so profound. You are so charismatic and have been from that first episode but now you have turned into a beautiful storyteller,” said Carrie Ann.

“I feel so honoured to be entangled in the Irwin story, just even a little bit, it means the world to me,” said Derreck as he battled tears.

“What I can tell about your father is that he lived life with so much enthusiasm. You, my friend, are this generations beacon of joy and enthusiasm. You’re not just following his path, you’re dancing it.”

The judges were so impressed with Robert and Witney’s dance that he landed a perfect score of 40/40.

Get ready to rock, my friends, because it’s Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame night on Dancing With The Stars US. This week, Robert and Whitney are performing a passionate high-energy Paso Doble.

After receiving his first score of 10 last week, Robert said he had a new found confidence. As he performed on stage, the judges praised the Wildlife Warrior for the passion and confidence he brought to the performance.

“Thunder from Down Under was unleashed,” judge Bruno exclaimed. Meanwhile, Carrie Ann said that she felt the dynamic duo had the “momentum” to take out the competition at the finale.

However, according to Robert, this dance was his “hardest” week yet to prepare for.

After getting rave reviews from the judges, Robert scored a beautiful 38/40.

This week on Dancing With The Stars US, Robert and his partner Witney performed a sexy Argentine Tango to a string arrangement of “Sweet Dreams Are Made Of This”.

With a spooky Halloween twist, the dance saw the pair dressed in gothic red and black, Dracula-inspired outfits.

The judges were incredibly impressed with their performance.

“That first moment — the whole room went silent,” judge Derek told them. “Well done, my man.”

Meanwhile, Bruno said their dance was “deadly hot”.

The stellar performance resulted in a whopping 38/40.

Get your favourite green and pink outfits because week six of Dancing With The Stars US is Wicked night!

To celebrate the magical theme, the film’s director Jon M. Chu will be joining the experts as a guest judge. And, to really add to the buzz, the night features special messages from Cynthia Erivo, Ariana Grande, Jonathan Bailey and Michelle Yeoh.

This week, the top 10 couples will perform songs from Wicked and it’s highly-anticipated sequel Wicked: For Good, including the fan favourites “Defying Gravity”, “Popular” and “Dancing Through Life”.

In true Prince Fiyero style, Robert and Witney will be performing Jazz to “Dancing Through Life”. You can check it out below.

After dancing their hearts out, all of the judges scored the duo a whopping nine out of 10.

“You really took the challenge. That was stunning,” said judge Carrie Ann Inaba.

“That choreography, Witney, was stunning. It showcased Robert in the best way. Doing this in front of the man who brought this film to life is intimidating, but you nailed it.”

Meanwhile, Derreck Hough said that it was time Robert changed out of his hiking boots for Broadway shoes.

“You’ve got to change careers, you were meant to be on stage. You are a performer!” he exclaimed.

With such glowing reviews, Robert and Witney walked away with a brilliant 36/40.

Week five of Dancing With The Stars US is an emotional one for the 21-year-old. This week is dedication night, where the celebrities pick someone influential in their lives to honour with their dance.

While many expected Robert to pick his late father, Steve Irwin, like Bindi did when she was on the show in 2015, the Wildlife Warrior decided to dedicate his week five performance to his mother, Terri, with a touching performance to Phil Collin’s “You’ll Be In My Heart”.

You can check out his performance below.

The judges — just like the audience — were brought to tears by the heart-wrenching performance.

“He’s looking at you, kid, and he’s smiling,” said Bruno, referring to Robert’s father Steve. “All I can say is this was the true expression of everlasting love.”

“The love I have for your family. I love you guys. Man, I’m so proud of you,” Derek exclaimed emotionally. “You’ve become such an amazing man, and the world needs the Irwin family.”

Following their emotional performance, Carrie Ann awarded Witney and Robert with an eight, while Derek, Kym and Bruno gave them a nine, making their total 35/40.

The heartfelt dedication comes after Terri raised Robert and his sister Bindi as a single mum following his dad’s tragic death in 2006.

Robert also shared a dedicated post to his mum on social media.

“Tonight, I dance for my mum, the strongest person I know,” he wrote, alongside a series of family photos.

“My mum and dad created a legacy that I am proud to continue. I hope I can use this dance to share what she means to me, to our family, and to say, thank you for always supporting me through life’s ups and downs.”

This week, the celebrities were tasked with boogying to beloved Disney tracks for Disney Week.

In true Wildlife Warrior style, Robert and Witney performed a cha cha to Zootopia‘s “Try Everything”.

You can check it out below.

Although they did a great job, it wasn’t their best score of the competition.

Derek gave them a seven because he claimed that, despite Robert’s “Irwin aura”, his arms were a little off. Carrie Anne also awarded the couple a seven because she felt he lacked “flow”. Meanwhile, Bruno gave him an eight because “it was clean, it was clear, it was sweet”.

So, the pair walked away with 22/30.

It’s TikTok night! And you know what that means? Robert and his partner Witney are performing tracks that have gone viral on TikTok. It’s a fitting theme for the 21-year-old considering he has 9.1 million followers on the social media app. Impressive!

“My TikTok has always just been animals. My message is animal conservation. It’s another avenue to reconnect with nature,” he explained to Witney between training sessions.

This week, the duo is tasked with performing a salsa. While it’s typically a difficult dance style, it looked like a breeze for these two, especially since they’ve been sitting at the top of the leader board for two weeks in a row.

You can check it out below.

Dancing to “Million Dollar Baby” by Richman, the pair performed a sexy little salsa, saw Robert rip off his shirt halfway through.

The boogie was a complete hit with the judges. Judge Carrie Ann Inaba said it was a “great performance” and awarded them an eight.

Meanwhile, Dereck Hough praised Robert for the way he felt the music, but said it was a little “rigid” and gave them a seven. Bruno Tonioli agreed with Dereck (to the sound of the audiences’ boos) and gave them a seven.

All in all, they finished up with a score of 22/30. Not too shabby!

After Robert and Witney’s showstopping jive during week one, audiences had their expectations set pretty high for the dancing duo. Thankfully, they stepped up to the plate to perform a gorgeous tango to the classic Junior Senior track, “Move Your Feet”.

You can check it out below.

Their performance scored a whopping 22/30 from the judges, landing them at the top of the leader board alongside fellow celebrities Jen Affleck and Jordan Chiles.

Judge Carrie Ann Inaba exclaimed that Robert’s charisma was “off the charts”. Tell us something we don’t know, Carrie Ann!

Meanwhile, fellow judge Derek Hough had a very fitting adjective for the beloved Aussie: “Crikey!”

It’s hard to believe it’s only his second week! Robert is a natural! (Image: Dancing With The Stars US / Instagram)

As for Robert, he was smiling from ear to ear after the performance.

“I’m just happy to be here,” he said. “This is awesome. I never dreamed in a million years that I’d make it here but getting to be part of the Dancing With The Stars family is the best ever. I’m loving every second.”

Robert kicked off performance in the signature khakis before he ripped them off and joined Witney on the dancefloor to perform a jive to the song “Born to Be Wild”.

Quite a fitting track for the conservationist, don’t you think?

The pair did such a good job that they were awarded the most points out of every couple on the night, with judge Derek Hough calling it the “best first dance” he had ever seen on the show and scoring a nifty 22/30 from the judges.

He wasn’t the only judge raving about Robert’s performance, either. Speaking to TODAY, former Aussie Dancing With The Stars judge Paul Mercurio praised Robert for his technique right off the bat.

“The jive is incredibly difficult and watching that performance, he was so confident,” Mercurio explained.

“Some people who come on Dancing With The Stars, you can see that they aren’t going to be very good, and most of them haven’t had dance training.”

“I don’t believe Robert has [dance training], but you’d be surprised to learn that, because he certainly looks like he has experience,” Mercurio continued.

“He moves so beautifully, he was so fluid and confident in his body and you can’t teach that, it’s just something you have intrinsically and he’s got it in spades.”

Robert kicked off the competition with his mum, Terri, and Bindi supporting him from the audience. Once he finished his boogie, he couldn’t help but run into the audience and give his sister a hug. Aww!

Truthfully, it should come as no surprise that Robert is a natural on the dancefloor, especially after he shared some behind-the-scenes footage of his rehearsals with Witney on TikTok. In the clip, they seem to be shaping up as super solid team ready for any challenge the dancing competition throws at them.

You can check it out below.

After starting the competition with such a bang, we can’t wait to see how Robert and Witney go next week! Can they keep their high-scoring streak? Only time will tell.

Sadly, the American version of Dancing With The Stars isn’t available to stream in Australia. Well, unless you’re extremely committed to the cause and connect to the US server of Disney+ by using a VPN.

Fingers crossed Disney+ Australia adds it soon!
