The monarch is said to fully support the couple’s plan after a difficult 2024, when the Princess of Wales underwent preventative chemotherapy treatment.

A source shared: “If prioritising his family helps William become a better king, then it’s clearly a worthy investment.”

Another insider added: “The Prince of Wales has had an incredibly tough time of late… he lost his beloved grandmother, fell out with his brother, and endured terrible heartache with both his father and his wife. If this choice makes him feel happier and more confident when the time comes for him to accede to the throne, then it’s something his father supports wholeheartedly.”

A separate royal source also told the Daily Mail: “The whole point of having a Prince of Wales with his own household and funding from the monarch is to allow him the space and autonomy to do things differently. Sometimes they succeed, sometimes they fail. But even their failures prepare them to become better kings. Don’t forget His Majesty himself went through his fair share of ups and downs as heir to the throne.”

King Charles is also spending more time at Windsor Castle in a bid to be closer to his son and grandchildren.

Compared to their current home, Adelaide Cottage, which only has four bedrooms, Forest Lodge marks a significant upgrade, featuring eight bedrooms across three storeys. The property also includes six bathrooms, a long gallery, and underwent £1.5 million worth of renovations in 2001.

The Prince and Princess of Wales will pay market rent for Forest Lodge, though the specific amount will never be publicly disclosed for commercial reasons.

Part of the Crown Estate since 1829, Forest Lodge previously housed various royal staff, including equerries and private secretaries.

Renovation work has already begun, with the Wales family expected to move in before the end of 2025.

Sources close to the couple emphasise that their relocation from Kensington Palace to Adelaide Cottage in 2022 was only a “trial run” — a way to see if the Windsor area truly suited their family’s lifestyle.
