The dawning of a new year means a fresh opportunity for those looking to etch their names in the basketball history books.

And in the world of the NBA, where statistics reign, 2024 will be no exception.

From most All-Star appearances to individual franchise records, several key milestones stand to fall with players such as LeBron James, Steph Curry and Nikola Jokic, ready to claim them.

As the 2023-24 season continues and the new year gets underway, takes a look at some of the records and milestones that could be reached in 2024.

In 2023, LeBron James surpassed Kareem Abdul Jabbar to become the NBA’s all-time leading scorer. It was a defining moment and one that adds to the Lakers’ star credentials as one of the greatest basketball players of all time.

Now in 2024, the two-time Olympic champion is on the precipice of making even more history.

In addition to attempting to become the first NBA player to score 40,000 points, James could also claim the most All-Star appearances.

James is currently tied with Abdul-Jabbar with 19 appearances. If the Lakers man makes another All-NBA team, he will be the first-ever player to secure 20 selections in his career.

Already the NBA’s all-time leader in 3-point field goals made, having hit 3,500 in December last year, Steph Curry has the opportunity to reach a new benchmark in 2024 with 3,600 career 3-points now in his sights.  

At the time of publication, the Golden State Warriors talisman has made 3,536 three-pointers, making him 64 shy of the mark.

In the 2022-23 season, Nikola Jokic produced an NBA best when he knocked down 29 triple-doubles, and the Denver Nuggets star is showing no signs of slowing down.

Starting the 2023-24 season ranked sixth in the all-time triple-double list with 105, Jokic has already passed LeBron James and Jason Kidd to climb to fourth place.

Next in his sights is Hall of Famer Magic Johnson who achieved 138 triple-doubles during his career.

As the NBA’s all-time leader in triple-doubles, Russell Westbrook is already in historic stats territory, but the Los Angeles Clippers player could still make that achievement even more impressive.

Westbrook is just two triple-double performances short of making 200 career triple-doubles, which would set a truly remarkable precedent for others to chase.

Moreover, the 35-year-old is just shy of reaching the 25,000 career points benchmark. As it stands, Westbrook is currently 25th in all-time point-scoring leaders with 24,827 points.

Trae Young may only be 25 but the point guard is well into making his mark on the Atlanta Hawks.

Already at number two in 3-pointers made (991) for the Hawks, at the time of writing Young was just 60 three-pointers short of taking the top spot ahead of Mookie Blaylock.

Not just making waves in scoring, Young could also climb to the top of his franchise’s all-time assists list.

Having led the NBA in total assists for the last two regular seasons (737 assists in 2021-22 and 741 in 2022-23), as of early January, the Hawks star was just 243 assists away from supplanting Doc Rivers.
