The outfit Kendall Jenner chose for the Lacma Art and Film gala over the weekend provoked a mixed reaction on social media. The work of French Turkish designer Burc Akyol, this was no run-of-the-mill red-carpet look: it featured a sheer long-sleeve bodysuit with panelling over the chest and two strips framing the navel, styled under a low-cut draped silver skirt. (Some on the internet likened the offbeat motif at Kendall’s waist to a pause button.)
Unconventional, maybe, but the model is no stranger to a revealing outfit. Marni Senofonte, who was behind the almost entirely sheer crystal-encrusted Givenchy dress that Kendall wore to last year’s Met Gala, styled the supermodel on the night, and worked with hairstylist Jen Atkin and make-up artist Mary Phillips to bring her look to life.
Kendall’s appearance came days after she celebrated her 27th birthday on 3 November. On Instagram, she shared behind-the-scenes pictures from her party, including snaps of silver balloons and a cake that read “Happy Birthday Kenny”.
She also posted photos of her chosen birthday dress: a white vintage slip with a square neckline and lace detailing – a demure departure from the revealing look she wore to Lacma. From risqué pieces to minimalist staples and vintage finds, Kendall’s style is all about experimentation.
