On the first day of the trial, Shakira agreed to a fine agreement to settle the tax evasion case in Spain. According to the agreements, the Colombian singer will pay 7.6 million USD along with a 3-year suspended prison sentence.

Previously, Shakira was charged by Spanish prosecutors with six counts of not paying taxes to the government. The amount of money that prosecutors offered was 15.8 million USD from 2012 to 2014. Initially, the proposed sentence for the female singer was 8 years in prison and a fine of 26 million USD. However, after settlement, Shakira only needed to pay a smaller fine of $7.6 million.

In 2022, Shakira repeatedly asserted her innocence and refused to plead guilty. However, during this trial, the Hips Don’t Lie singer agreed to a settlement to resolve everything.

Speaking about the decision, Shakira explained: “While I am determined to defend my innocence and my lawyers believe that the verdict will be in my favor, I have made the decision to resolve the matter.” “This is the best and most beneficial way for my children. I don’t want them to see their mother sacrifice their personal happiness in this war.”

“Throughout my career, I have always tried to do the right thing and be a positive example for others,” the singer continued, “Unfortunately, despite these efforts, tax authorities in the West Spain is still pursuing the case against me as they have done with many other athletes and celebrities. This has wasted their energy and time for many years.”

Also in her statement, Shakira affirmed that paying the fine was to help her “focus on her children and career opportunities”.
